T is for Tijuana

Just south of San Diego, across the border into Mexico, is the city of Tijuana. Tijuana and its surrounding metropolitan areas have a population of more than 1,650,000. Tijuana today is one of the fastest growing cities in Mexico with an average of 80,000 people moving to Tijuana yearly, many from poorer parts of Mexico, and from Central American countries, seeking economic opportunities.
Tijuana is a dominant manufacturing center of the North American continent. The city maintains facilities of numerous multinational conglomerate companies.
Tijuana has roughly 550 assembly plants that are called maquiladoras. Foreign and domestic companies employ thousands of employees in these plants, usually in assembly-related labor. Companies that have set up maquiladoras in Tijuana include Hyundai, Sony, Vortec, BMW, Vizio, Toyota, Dell, Samsung, Kodak, Matsushita/Panasonic, GE, Nabisco, Ford, Microsoft, Philips, Pioneer, Airbus, Siemens Mexico, Jaguar, Sanyo, and Volkswagen.
The city is the most visited border city on the globe. Over fifty million people cross the border between these two cities every year. This metropolitan crossing makes the San Ysidro Port of Entry the busiest land-border crossing in the world.

you made my mouth water for Carnitas Uruapan…. used to make the trip just for a kilo of carnitas and all the mariachis. oh, to hear Volver, Volver!
Suzanne, I don’t even know what Carnitas Uruapan are, but I love carnitas, so I’ll have to investigate that place. Bill is doing some seminars across the border nowdays, so we get down there from time to time.
Nice and sunny there with a lot of bright colours to cheer everyone up. I love the two tone colour on the cars.
This is a side of Mexico I haven’t seen before, mainly a big city and not a resort 🙂 Great post!
Hi Calli – Thank you for stopping by. You know, there’s another side to TJ that I didn’t mention, and I wonder if I should go back and add it to the post. That is the shanty towns that are all around the outskirts of the city, a result of the huge influx of impoverished people from all over Central American, seeking economic opportunity. A sad side.
Haven’t been to Tijuana in quite a while. Really interesting to know about the assembly plants. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve only been to Tijuana once…it was interesting. I love your pics!
Thanks, Corinne!
